The setting of this piece is a psychiatric hospital with nine doors lined up on stage. Each character enters and exits through different doors for different reasons, and their perceptions of and connections to the outside world (interpreted here as “society”) vary.
To reflect each character’s view of the outside world—whether longing, fear, or rejection—symbolic sound effects were used. These sounds would play from “outside” when a door was opened and stop when it was closed. Around 30 everyday sounds were used, including a baby crying, marching footsteps, and camera shutters.
Speakers were installed in all nine doors, and to precisely control the spatial positioning of each sound, a total of 19 speakers were used throughout the space. Additionally, to create the sensation of rumbling or ground vibration, subwoofers were placed below the stage floor at the same level as the audience, allowing the physical vibration to be felt directly.
