Sir Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. He became the first person, along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Hillary's historic achievement propelled him to international fame and established him as one of the most renowned mountaineers in history. He dedicated his life to humanitarian efforts in Nepal, establishing the Himalayan Trust to improve the lives of the Sherpa people. Hillary also led the New Zealand section of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1958. He authored many books, delivered public lectures, and received numerous honors for his contributions to mountaineering and exploration.
