Located in a remote part of Shanxi Province in China, the majority of the population primarily consists of families whom do not have the same standard of living as other provinces and areas in China. As a remote area, the population is primarily made of farmers who earn subsistence income and many lack basic education as well as other essential services. Because of its remote rural area, it is not easily accessible and so teachers who would be qualified or experienced to teach are not willing to come teach (and those who do come, only have the knowledge and experience to teach at a higher grade level). After years of fundraising, Mrs. Christine Chan and a group of individuals worked to build a boarding school, and Bo Ai Elementary School opened in 2005, replacing eight elementary schools in the area, providing free kindergarten and primary education as well. Bo Ai school's funding comes from donations such as OHH, BAFL, TLO and people who care about China's next generation. The funding supports teacher salaries, student tuition, room and board, school facilities and school maintenance. As part of the newly constructed Bo Ai Middle School (in 2011), I was tasked with simplifying and redesigning Bo Ai School's existing photobook, which was used to showcase the school grounds, life around the school and the newly constructed middle school.
