MEMENTO is a hypothesis of adaptive reuse for the abandoned Mong Kok Market in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Constructed in 1977, the market was largely underutilized despite the highly populated surroundings. With the surrounding hawker streets and other indoor public markets outcompeting the said market, the market was decommissioned on March 1, 2010. Its once trendy Bauhaus architecture remained as a record of past time. Until recently, there are proposal of revitalizing the market as a local health center. Rather than the traditional heritage preservation approach, MEMENTO propose to preserve the ruin, to make use of the static (abandoned market) inside the dynamic (Mong Kok) for making, healing & remembering.
