"Devotion // Distortion" This is a journal of worship. A chronicle of hunger. A design study of fixation in the age of avatars and algorithms. Devotion lives in every scroll, every like, every shrine built from merch and imagination. This is parasocial love—unseen, unreciprocated, and insatiable. Poster Series on Parasocial Obsession in Two Voices This poster series explores the obsessive nature of parasocial relationships through a narrative divided into two distinct yet intertwined perspectives: the obsessive fan, and the external observer. Drawing inspiration from handwritten love letters, digital decay, and emotional unraveling, the work uses typography and glitch aesthetics to visualize the psychosis of longing and the alienation of critique. The Voice of the Fan (Devotion) This perspective draws heavily from the fan’s point of view—letters saturated with hunger, worship, and delusion. These posters feature chaotic, fragmented text, overlapping type, scribbled annotations, and digital type that mimic the uncontrolled, frantic tone of emotional outpouring. Words spiral across the page. Messages repeat obsessively. Glitch overlays mimic livestream buffering or corrupted digital files, visually reinforcing the distortion between reality and fantasy. These pieces don’t depict the idol directly—instead, they reveal the architecture of obsession: phrases, references, imagined intimacy. The Voice of the Onlooker (Distortion) In contrast, this layer of the series presents a colder, distanced voice—critical, clinical, even mocking. It observes the fan from afar, dissecting their devotion as spectacle. These posters use clean sans-serifs, sterile layouts, and restrained but intentional visual “errors”—dead pixels, broken grids, system fonts, HTML language—mirroring the emotional sterility of the critique. Here, obsession becomes pathology: data points, diagnosis, a breakdown in human intimacy reframed as a performance for an indifferent algorithm. Conceptual Approach Rather than portraying shrines, celebrities, or recognizable characters, this series uses text as artifact—love letters, inner monologues, warnings, and commentaries. Viewers are not shown the object of affection. Instead, they confront the emotional residue, the overwhelming presence of absence, and the systems that allow this dynamic to flourish. Each poster is a page in a fragmented narrative—emotional on one side, analytical on the other—mirroring the duality of parasocial love: intimate to the fan, invisible to the beloved. May 2025
